James Russell Lowell (1819-1891)

American poet

He was in the group of authors called the Fireside Poets together with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes: they had a conservative approach to verse and were popular in their day, but some members were abolitionists and consequently not so conservative. Lowell gave a contribution to Arthurian literature with his poem The Vision of Sir Launfal (1848), used as a school text and reprinted several times.
